Classic Car Auctions says:

Sparkling, low mileage Swedish Starlet! Cherished by its current owner for the last 9 years, this three-owner Volvo 1800 ES is being sold with the most appropriate number plate, 1800 ES.
The white bodywork was given a respray during the cars tenure with Hylton Gott, dealer principal of Hylton Gott Volvo in Downham Market, Norfolk (apparently for no other reason than to keep his paint sprayer busy!) Taken in part exchange, the vehicle was occasionally MoT'd and rarely driven, and '1800 ES' was used for various showroom promotions until 2007, when it was acquired by its current custodian with an indicated mileage of 23,777, which we believe may well be correct but are unable to warrant.
The car is described as very smart, both inside and out, with its original carpets, and seats which are unrestored with good patina and no rips or tears. The headlining is perfect and unmarked, as is the dash, which, unusually, is not cracked. The bodywork and underside appear in good order, with no obvious evidence of welding or filler. All the panel gaps are excellent and the doors shut beautifully. All the instruments appear to work correctly, even the clock, often faulty on these cars, and there are no concerning warning lights. The tyres were renewed when the car was recommissioned for the current owner at Hylton Gott and the battery was also replaced at that point.
The car is fitted with period Minilite wheels, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, the Volvo 1800S radiator grille and Accuspark electronic ignition, however all the original parts are available and included in the sale. Recent work carried out on the car included the replacement of the rear springs, rear shock absorbers and rear suspension bushes with new items from Brookhouse Volvo of Woodbridge. The car is offered for sale with its owner's handbook and wallet, original jack, some original tools.
When it was initially introduced, the P1800's looks were a touch divisive and its place in the motoring world a little unclear, however with the benefit of the passing years it's now seen as a good looking and stylish example of Swedish innovative design and has a 'fan club' that's growing daily.

Vendor Condition Report

Overall: 97 / 135

Exterior

Bodywork: Glass:
Paint: Chrome:
Trim:

Remarks

The body work and underside is original and unrestored, with the exception of a respray some time in the 1980s. There is no evidence of accident damage, repair or welding. The fuel tank, tank sender and fuel pump were all replaced within the last 2 years.

Interior

Door-cards: Carpets:
Seating: Headlining:
Dashboard: Boot:

Remarks

The interior is all original, with very little wear or fading to the carpets, excellent patina to the undamaged leather seats and original door cards in excellent condition with still taut elastic in the door pockets.

Engine

Components: Starting:
Appearance: Running:

Remarks

The engine benefits from Accuspark electronic ignition and consequently starts promptly in all weathers, runs smoothly and energetically throughout the rev range, at the correct temperature, with good all pressure at idle and driving. It also has the enhancement of a chrome rocker cover. The previously mentioned fuel pump and sender aid starting and running of the engine.

Transmission

Gears: Drive-shaft:
Clutch:

Remarks

The 4-speed gearbox and overdrive (on fourth gear only) function exactly as they should, exhibiting only the wear expected for the indicated mileage and operating without any untoward noises, whines or jumping out of gear.

Running Gear

Axles: Chassis:
Suspension: Bearings:
Brakes: Wheels/Tyres:

Remarks

The chassis and underside appear to have been undersealed from new and show no evidence of damage, repair or welding. The rear suspension benefits from recent replacement of springs, shock absorbers and bushes, supplied by Brookhouse Volvo. The front suspension is original. Wheels are genuine Minilite wheels, including the spare, contained in a fitted cover below the loadspace floor. The braking system is adequate rather than sharp, and benefits from rear calipers renewed during recommissioning in 2007 and later renewal of all braking system flexible pipes.

Electrics

Minor: Major:

Remarks

All electrics and electronics, including the original Bosch electronic fuel injection operate faultlessly. All instruments and warning lights are in full working order, including the electronic rev counter, overdrive warning light dimmer and, unusually, the clock. The fuel gauge operates as new, thanks to the replacement of the fuel tank sender with an electronic replacement.

Vehicle History

Remarks

The car was taken in part exchange in 1983 by Hylton Gott Volvo Dealership in Downham Market, Norfolk and taken into the personal ownership of Mr Hylton Gott, occasionally MOT'd and rarely driven. The white bodywork was given a respray during his ownership, apparently for no other reason than to keep his paint sprayer busy! The car was used for various showroom promotions until 2007 when it was acquired by its current owner with an indicated mileage of 23777, to which has been added less than a further 10000 miles. Under current ownership the car failed its first MoT solely on a brake flexible pipe union that had not been fully tightened, but this was rectified by the tester (at no charge!) and the car has passed every subsequent MoT with no advisories.
