Ford was not blind to Chevrolet's new Corvette but chose to develop a car along a different path. It was decided that their car would be made of metal instead of fibreglass, be powered by a V-8 engine unlike the Corvette's Blue Flame Six, and that it would feature roll-down windows and an optional hardtop unlike the Corvette's snap on curtains. There was one engine for the first 1955 T-Birds, and it was the 292ci, Y-Block. V-8 fitted with a single four-barrel carburettor. With the standard 3-speed manual transmission, this engine made 193 horsepower, and with the optional Ford-o-Matic transmission, it was a touch more at 198bhp.
